افسر پروسي و نظريهپرداز نظامي.&nbsp;كتاب اصلياش، با&nbsp;عنوان «دربارة جنگ»<ref>(On War (Vom Kriege</ref> (که بعد از مرگش در 1832 منتشر شد)، در امور نظامي و بعدها در تجارت و برخي استراتژيها دگرگونيهاي اساسي پديد آورد. نظرية مشهور او دربارة جنگ اين است كه جنگ گسترش خط مشي سياسي به طرق ديگر است، بنابراين نميتوان پاياني براي آن در نظر گرفت. نظريههاي كلاوزويتش به شدت مورد توجه استراتژيستهاي سوداگر امروزي قرار گرفت. جنگ در اصطلاح كلاوزويتش تجارت گونهاي متمدن شده از جنگ است كه در آن شركتها و نه ملتها عليه يكديگر به رقابت ميپردازند. كلاوزويتش معتقد بود كه جنگ ضربه زدن به طرف مقابل با تمركز نيرو در نقاط سرنوشتساز (جنگ تمام عيار) با استفاده همة منابع موجود است. هدف نهايي، چه در تجارت و چه در جنگ، بهبود عملكرد با استفاده از هوشمندي بالا به جاي رقابت و تكيه بر تجزيه و تحليل اطلاعات براي يك اقدام قطعي است. كلاوزويتش در «بورگ»<ref>Burg</ref>، نزديك «ماگدبورگ»<ref>Magdeburg</ref> زاده شد و در سال 1792 به عنوان يك دانشجوي جوان دانشكده افسري وارد ارتش پروس<ref>Prussian Army</ref> شد. در عمليات راين<ref>Rhine</ref> (1793ـ1794) برضد ارتش انقلابي فرانسه<ref>French Revolutionary Aemy</ref> خدمت كرد، در 1801 به آكادمي نظامي برلين<ref>Berlin Military Academy</ref> راه يافت. در آنجا زير نظر ژنرال «فون شارن هورست»<ref>Von Scharnhorst</ref> علوم نظامي و فلسفه خواند و در 1804 فارغالتحصيل شد و آجودان پرنس آرگوست شاهزادة پروس<ref>Prince Auguste of Prussia</ref> شد. در 1806 در طي جنگهاي ناپلئوني<ref>Napoleonic Wars</ref> مجروح و در «ینا»<ref>Jena</ref> به اسارت درآمد. بعد از آزادي در 1808 به پروس برگشت و قبل از اين كه در 1810 به مقام استادي و مدرس نظامي در «كراون پرنس»<ref>Crown Prince</ref> برسد، دستيار «شارن هورست»، كه در امر اصلاح ارتش كار ميكرد، شد. بعدها به منظور خدمت به ارتش روسيه<ref>Russian Army</ref> (1812-1814) عليه ناپلئون، از سمت خود استعفا كرد و به آنان در مذاكرة كنوانسيون تاوروگن<ref>Convention of Tauroggen</ref> كمك كرد تا اتحاد پروس با روسيه و انگلستان عليه فرانسه را فراهم سازد. سپس در 1815 مجدداً به خدمت ارتش پروس درآمد و در جريان نبرد واترلو<ref>Waterloo</ref> در مقام رئيس ستاد خدمت كرد. سه سال بعد به مقام ژنرالي رسيد و تا 1830 رئيس مدرسۀ عمومي جنگ<ref>General War School</ref> در برلين شد و تحقيقات خود را در آنجا به اتمام رساند. در 1830 در مقام ناظر ارتش پروس در برسلاو<ref>Breslau</ref> در مرز لهستان شد و يك سال بعد در اثر بيماري وبا در همانجا درگذشت.<br />
